Step
4 - Put Plan into Action
Success feels great but how do
you get there? The same way you eat an elephant. So, take small bites or
steps, celebrate small and big successes, and keep ticking off steps as
you complete them. Most of the time and effort goes into choosing,
researching, and planning for your employment goal. It starts to go much
faster as you start taking steps. Your action plan becomes your blueprint
or map for completing steps and achieving your goals.
Your action plan is a living thing and will likely change as you discover
new information related to your employment goals, the labour market, or
your training options. Sometimes you might feel discouraged. Working on
completing your plan often takes longer than you expect. Any major life
change (especially things that happen outside of your control) can be
stressful. Take time to celebrate each step of your progress towards
reaching your employment goals.
As things change and other opportunities or challenges arise, you may need
assistance as your plan unfolds. Look for help from other people or
places. This could mean talking with family and friends about your plans
and asking for their feedback. Help can be found in community agencies,
schools, colleges, and even online. Stay in touch with your employment
advisor – he or she can help you explore other options, link you with
resources and keep you progressing towards your employment goals
And to quote a rather famous doctor:
"You have brains in your head; you have feet in your shoes; you can steer
yourself any direction you choose!"
from " Oh - the Places You'll Go" by Dr. Suess, 1989
