BRIDGES COORDINATOR
The overall goal of the Bridges Coordinator is to ensure that all Aboriginal children in care are connected to their Aboriginal families and communities, culture and heritage by:
• Encouraging and assisting Aboriginal communities in reconnecting and reclaiming their children and youth who are in the care of MCFD
• Nurturing a sense of belonging for Aboriginal children in care, a sense that they are part of and connected to their birth and extended family, Aboriginal community, culture and heritage
• Reviewing (MCFD Referred) child's current file to create personalized cultural plans and packages
• Providing cultural guidance for the project team working with selected children, families and community members
• Guiding team members to build on the capacity of aboriginal children, families and communities to assist in the planning of safe care options for children when necessary
Qualifications & Experience:
• Minimum Grade 12 diploma and at least 3 years prior experience; preference for diploma/degree in health, education or social services field
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation with Business Use insurance of $2000,000 third party liability (reimbursable by SWFC)
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Software required for file management and reporting
• Good interpersonal communication and public engagement abilities to work collaboratively with the Ministry of Children & Family Development and First Nations Communities
• Experience or knowledge of social work, family support, first nation's communities and aboriginal heritage would be an asset.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of cultural sensitivity when working with Aboriginal families and communities.
• Ability to work independently and as a team to complete tasks in a timely manner
• Child welfare screening and criminal record check are required.
• Preference may be considered to those who self-identify as Aboriginal status/ancestry.
• Knowledge of Kwakwakawakw family & cultural systems would be preferential
