The Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre is seeking an outgoing, motivated individual with an interest in salmon education, enhancement, conservation, tourism and outdoor leadership for full-time seasonal summer employment. Applicants must be enrolled and returning to full-time studies in the Fall.
1. Act as an interpretive guide and welcome visitors that come to the Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre, providing a consistent, high quality program about the ecologic and economic importance of salmon to Northern Vancouver Island and beyond.
2. Become familiar with the history of the Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre and Northern Vancouver Island Salmonid Enhancement Association as a not-for profit dedicated to salmonid enhancement, education and conservation.
3. Become familiar with the operations of the Quatse River Hatchery, each of the different species reared at the facility, and the process of rearing salmonids and their life cycle.
4. Able to identify any safety, security or environmental concerns and promptly resolve the issue or communicate with Quatse Staff for help.
5. Use of the cash register in the gift shop/admissions.
6. Assist with the development and delivery of games, activities and children’s programming related to salmon education and conservation.
7. Clean rental spaces (kitchen, meeting room) and interpretive centre (gift shop, exhibits, washrooms).
8. Assist with the organization and execution of public and community events (including setting up mobile display, delivering information to visitors as a representative of the QSSC, and running children’s activities).
9. Other hatchery or campground duties as required.
• All staff must arrive prior to the start of their shift and are expected to be present for the entire length of the scheduled shift.
• As a guide, you would be working with members of the general public. It is important you maintain a positive attitude and a professional appearance. This includes remaining unbiased regarding sensitive cultural and environmental issues.
• Note: Any time off must be required must be requested at least 10 days in advance - please keep in mind the job requires working most Saturdays and Sundays, so requests for weekends may not be given.

• Ability to work independently, take initiative and to follow directions
• Able to stand and walk for extended amounts of time
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to interact with people of all ages, including international visitors, comfortable speaking in front of a group
• Reliable mode of transportation an asset
• Valid 1st Aid certificate an asset
