The purpose of the Aboriginal Youth Navigator program is to enhance service provision, provide advocacy, and ensure youth are aware of services available to them once they age out of Ministry care, decrease youth in care, and improve accountability through a youth-centered approach that focuses on meeting the needs of youth.
The Aboriginal Outreach Youth Navigator will provide support and guidance to Aboriginal youth involved with the Ministry, youth transition planning, youth on probation, youth agreements, aging out and/or in government care. Youth can also voluntarily seek services for other advocacy support.
The Navigator acts as the “Navigator” for youths to assist them to understand and access the multitude of youth support services that may be available to them.
Qualifications & Experience:
Sound knowledge of the Child Family Community Services Act (CFCSA) or the ability to develop an understanding of this legislation quickly.
Sound knowledge of how MCFD and Aboriginal Child and Family Services Agencies operate.
Preference given to individual with a BSW, Child & Youth Care degree or diploma and/or human service diploma and demonstrated related working experience.
Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and history.
Experience working with MCFD or other Aboriginal service organizations.
Ability to develop strong working relationships with Aboriginal communities and youth.
Ability to facilitate and lead group processes.
Ability to develop strong collaborative team relationship with colleagues and service providers in community.
Ability to work independently.
Demonstrated experience in conflict resolution.
Experience or skill working with Aboriginal youth at risk.
Preference will be given to person of Aboriginal ancestry
Must have own vehicle and a valid driver’s licence
