SUMMARY
Plans, implements, and oversees the cultural components of a program. Leads and
participates in cultural activities with youth.
Participates in cultural programming development and evaluation
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform the job successfully a worker must be able to consistently perform each essential
duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.
Plans and implements cultural activities and special events for a program.
Oversees the cultural components of a program by ensuring that the necessary facilities and
materials are in place, program guidelines and policies are adhered to, program standards
are met, and the cultural components are culturally safe and appropriate.
Recruits, selects, orients, monitors, and provides support to cultural volunteers such as
Elders.
Makes recommendations to management regarding cultural development and program
evaluation.
Promotes cultural awareness amongst staff and clients by introducing culturally appropriate
materials, researching cultural events, and supporting staff to practice in culturally safe
ways.
Liaises with local Indigenous peoples and Elders to coordinate cultural activities and to
represent the organization at cultural events.
Monitors the cultural activity budget and ensures expenditures remain within budget.
Maintains accurate records, prepares reports, and attends meetings as required by The John
Howard Society of North Island.
Offers and receives support to and from co-workers as part of a team providing integrated,
holistic services. Represents the agency in the community when required, and maintains
healthy relationships with other helping organizations and the community at large.
Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications & Experience:
QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements listed below detail the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform
the essential duties of the job.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Diploma in a related human/social service related field
Extensive knowledge of local Indigenous cultures, including involvement with local
Indigenous nations.
Two (2) years’ experience working with high risk youth which should include:
Experience developing and delivering Indigenous cultural programming.
Experience working with youth and families with high risk lifestyles, in a helping
capacity.
Experience working independently in an outreach model and as a team.
Experience working with the impact of the following issues on child and youth
development: residential schools and intergenerational trauma, substance abuse,
physical and sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, family dynamics, child and family
development.
Knowledge and experience in maintaining confidentiality, appropriate boundaries, and
other basic counselling ethics.
Demonstrated ability to work constructively and cooperatively in a team setting.
Knowledge of Indigenous community resources for youth and families.
The diploma requirement can be waived for persons of Indigenous ancestry who demonstrate
extensive knowledge of Indigenous culture
