THE OPPORTUNITY
What You’ll Do: The GIS Analyst plays a critical role in supporting short and long-term forestry planning decisions. Working as part of the Inventory and Analysis team, the ideal candidate will be highly adept at managing and analyzing large spatial data sets including LiDAR, at scripting complex tasks using Python and at providing succinct visualizations, maps, summaries and reports to facilitate informed decision making.

Work Environment: This role could be preformed fully remote or in a hybrid work environment in the Campbell River office with infrequent in-person tasking within the office with proper safety plans in place.
RESPONSIBILITIES

Operational
-Manage and update large spatial datasets.
-Undertake advanced geoprocessing and editing tasks in the ESRI software suite.
-Prepare spatial data resultants to support Timber Supply Analyses.
-Maintain, edit, upload and report on data within Western’s Forestry Management System.
-Automate repetitive tasks using Python, Model Builder and/or SQL.
-Produce high-quality maps and visual representations of analysis products.
-Work with our MIS department to oversee and implement software updates.
Qualifications & Experience:
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
The GIS Analyst brings advanced skills and proficiency to the position. The GIS Analyst is a refined GIS professional with the following credentials:
-Post-secondary degree or diploma in GIS from a recognized and accredited institution is preferred.
-5+ years of professional and advanced experience in GIS, preferably in forestry.
-Documented training with current GIS software and programming languages.
-Demonstrated understanding of forestry requirements and challenges.
-Registration or eligibility for professional accreditation is preferred.
Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies
This position requires an individual to be forward thinking in an often rapidly changing environment. The qualifications that differentiate the GIS Analyst are as follows:
-Advanced skills in geomatics including editing, mapping, geo-processing, querying and reporting;
-Advanced automation and programming skills using Python, Model Builder and SQL;
-Expertise using the ESRI software suite of tools;
-Expertise with ArcServer or ArcSDE maintenance and data updates;
-Expertise with LiDAR point cloud and raster data, ortho imagery;
-Advanced skills in database management using SQL Server and/or Oracle;
-Solid understanding of forest management and land use planning, including uploading, editing and querying data from Forest Management Systems such as Trimble Resources, TFM or LRM;
-Demonstrated skills in project management, problem solving and organization;
-Refined written and oral communication skills;
-Developed understanding of business drivers and performance measures;
-Ability to lead, mentor and motivate junior staff;
-Experience with applications such as Server, Portal, GeoEvent Server, FME, R, LP360 and Fusion is an asset.
